Berlusconi's Cujo Costs $546,000 per Day, Italian Taxpayers Will Pay the Bill :: Mr Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian tycoon that won the April 2008 elections by landslide to become Prime Minister for the third time, may enjoy all sort of luxuries, of course, but at least one of these will not cost him a dime because Italian taxpayers are the ones that will have to pay the bill: his Cujo.

Italians united on pulling the plug, the rule of law still far away: She has been dubbed "the Italian Terry Schiavo": Eluana Englaro, a woman in a persistent vegetative state after a car crash in 1992, whose father is strenuously fighting for the right to pull the plug. She was 20 years old when the accident devastated her brain without taking her life. Her body recovered from severe injuries; she breathes by herself but she shows no cortex activity, can't eat or drink and she is fed through a tube from her nose.

In Italia la legge sul testamento biologico, che secondo i suoi fautori avrebbe evitato un caso come quello di Eluana, è ferma da due legislature. Proprio la questione se considerare l'alimentazione e l'idratazione una terapia, e quindi passibili di essere interrotte per accanimento terapeutico, è uno dei principali scogli che divide i partiti. Nel resto d'Europa invece hanno dato il riconoscimento legale al testamento biologico la Danimarca, la Germania, l'Olanda, la Francia, la Spagna e il Belgio. Nel Regno Unito è riconosciuto da una consolidata giurisprudenza. Nel resto del mondo lo ammettono gli Usa, il Canada e l'Australia.
